Department at A Glance
The Department of Hindi has an illustrious history. It came into existence with the inception of the college in 1958. The faculty associated with the department in the past included some renowned litterateurs and distinguished teachers like Dr. Kantikumar Jain, Dr. Prabhat Kumar Tripathi, Dr. Narendradev Verma (who penned state song of Chhattisgarh) etc. The intellectual contribution and academic output rendered by them towards teaching and literary creativities in Hindi are very significant.
The Department is endowed with 05 regular and 03 full-time guest faculty appointed on a contract basis, all holding research degrees. All the regular faculty members have more than three decades of experience in teaching. Some of them are actively involved in research and literary criticism. The Department is adequately enriched in terms of academic excellence and teaching experience. There are 8 posts sanctioned in the department. Besides teaching, research and other academic activities the faculty members have a fairly good number of publications to their credit. One of the faculty members is a well known literary critic, who has published two outstanding books on literary criticism. He has been conferred with
Muktibodh Samman
and
Vanmali Samman
for his significant works in literary criticism. He has also been awarded the prestigious fellowship by the Raza Foundation, instituted by one of India‟s leading contemporary artists Syed Haider Raza who was a great lover of literature also. Some faculty members are often invited by the other institutions to deliver guest lectures and also as subject experts or resource persons in the seminars, symposia, workshops and writers-conferences. One of the faculty members has delivered three e-lectures for e-PGpathshala programme of UGC.
The faculty members have also been nominated as members of the Board of Studies by the University and various Autonomous colleges. The Head of the Department had been working as Chairman of the Board of Studies, Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur during the year 2011-14. One of the faculty members has been appointed by the University as dean of the Arts Faculty and Board of Studies. A former Head of the department was also dean of the Arts Faculty and Board of Studies. Every undergraduate student in the college has to compulsorily pursue the study of the Hindi language, as it is an essential component of all undergraduate syllabi. Apart from that, a large number of students offer Hindi literature as an optional subject for their undergraduate courses.
The students are admitted strictly on the basis of their marks in the qualifying examinations at the entry-level, in PG as well as in the UG courses. The students in the department usually come from different social strata, but mostly they belong to the deprived and marginalized sections of society. They, by and large, belong to lower and middle-income groups and semi-urban or rural backgrounds. The majority of them are well versed in the local dialect, Chhattisgarhi. Having a working knowledge of Hindi, they are not competent enough to smoothly express themselves in a formalized urban language, facing a challenge to improve their language proficiency. The department strives to enhance the language skills of these students. A remarkable improvement in command over the Hindi language is often observed among PG students. They are also motivated to use Information and Communication Technology tools for enhanced learning.
