Learning Language Through Culture
The English Language Lab has openeda unique way to teach English to students. In this method the students listento experts from various countries talk about their culture. The program thatruns for one and half hours and involves the following steps.
First, after the initial welcomingof all by the coordinator Dr Somali Gupta, one of the students introduces theguest to the rest of the participants and welcomes the guest on behalf of thecollege and the participants. Then the guest shares about his/her culture foraround 40 -45 mins. The session is then opened for Q&A session for 20 mins.After that as a mark of respect, 2 students present 2 different aspects ofIndian Culture to the Guest. Finally, one student offers the Vote of thanks.
Other activities like making Flyers,participating in a Quiz based on the lectures they have heard, makingPresentations, preparing and Reading out the Introduction and offering the Voteof thanks further helps them to improve their language skills. The studentswere practicing all the four skills Reading writing speaking and writing inEnglish and more through these activities. Thus, through various activitiesthey used thedifferent levels of human cognition—i.e., thinking, learning, and understanding.
The students have also participatedin webinars organized by other countries thus building their general knowledgeand gaining confidence by actively participating in them. Each activity was designedto develop a particular competence in the students.

There are 61 active participants inthe program and experts from 14 countries have addressed the students for far.
The students have also participatedin webinars organized by “Enjoy Reading” a voluntary reading group fromIndonesia.
The program started on 19thJan 2021 with the following 14 speakers different countries.
The program was inaugurated by Dr.Prashant Shrivastava, Dean, Student’s Welfare, Hemchand Yadav University, Durg,C.G. on 19th January 2021.

The second Phase of InternationalCultural Exchange started in April 2021.and the students attended Virtual Cafeswith the students from English Studies Unit, BraudeAcademic College of Engineering, Karmiel, Israel and Centre for ForeignLanguages, Humanities and Social Sciences Wroclaw University of Environmentaland Life Sciences Poland. The meetings are held fortnightly.
There have been 4 meetings so far.The students are given que questions and put in break out room with 3-4students in each group to interact with each other for half n hour.
A cultural exchange also startedwith the students of University of Nis Serbia and students of Turkey, withstudents presenting their culture through PPTs to each other.
II. English Café : An Open House for English LanguageLearning
A new concept to provide space tostudents for stress free learning .
Coffee houses have been the hotspotfor meetings and discussions on various topics ranging from poetry to politics,philosophy to physics since long, and over the years has developed a traditionand culture of its own. Anchoring on this concept of learning and sharing ingroups i.e. getting together to learn in a quasi-formal setup, English caféprovides the necessary forum to students to learn and practice the four skillsof language namely, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Here the studentsshare, discuss and learn from each other and also from subject experts.
While the Café focuses primarily onSpoken skills, it uses various methods to involve students with their learningagenda in an interesting way. The Open Space of the Café is used for guidedpractice sessions through different exercises.
Like Cafes, the space is open forall students of Govt.V.Y.T.PG.Autonomous College, Durg.
The students will also be able touse the lab when the college reopens.
Currently the interested students meet twice aweek to practice learning.
The Café provides space for:
● Opportunities to practice speaking
● Preparing PPTs and presenting
● Develop deep listening skills
● Writing skills as in emails, resume, essays and reports.
● Practice Reading to improve pronunciation and intonation
In the current session nearly 489students are enrolled in the café and they are allowed to make their choice oflearning from the Basic or advanced group depending on the self-assessment ofown their language competence.
III.The Circle of Hope and Smile: The students also created aplatform to reach out to students in distress during pandemic. They provideempathetic listening and friendly support to others.
IV.5 Day Soft Skills Program: The 5 day soft skills program forstudents was organized in collaboration with ASEED- Innovative Training Centrefrom 13th to 17 May 2021. The topics Leadership, Motivation , Timemanagement, Communication and Critical Thinking were covered. Visitingfaculties of ASEED, Dr Rita Sengupta, Ex- Director of NISBUD, Mr. MussaratHussain, Chief Leadership Academy, Maruti Udyog, along with Dr N.P. Singh thedirector of Aseed conducted the programme. The program was inaugurated by theVice Chancellor of Hemchand Yadav University Dr. Aruna Palta, and DSW ofHemchand Yadav Univ, Dr Prashant Shrivastava. 132 students (including studentsfrom other colleges ie. Koobchand Bhaghel Mahavidyalaya, Govt.Digvijay College,Rajnandgaon.) participated in the program. Certificate of Participation was given to the participants.
