GANDHIAN SWARAJ : A CONTINUOUS PROCESS

Dr. Shakeel husain Asst. Professor Political Science. Govt. VYT PG Autonomous College Durg Chhattisgarh.

Gandhi was a political and socialactivist rather than a philosopher or thinker. However, the level of moralityand purity in his politics was so high that it took politics to the spiritualand philosophical level. The same thing can be said for his social and economicthoughts. Therefore, Gandhi's Swaraj is cultural, political and spiritualbecause politics was a spiritual ( religious) work for him. The question ofSwaraj was not just a political question for him, nor did Swaraj mean for himonly the expulsion of the British from India but freedom from slavery mentalityas well . Thus, Gandhian Swaraj goes beyond the concept of political sef rule and freedom.Swaraj is one'sself rule over  body and soul, acomprehensive self control. Swaraj is an equally important question in postindependent India too. Swaraj is a vigilance for civil rights, public welfare, constitutionalism and good governance in a politically independent country. Itempowers civil society. Hence Swaraj is continuous effort of independence andinsistence on truth against arbitrary power of state and thus Swaraj createsand empowers civil society. From this point of view, Locke, Mill, and Rousseauare seen together in his Swarajist thoughts. Therefore, for Gandhi, Swaraj is acontinuous  process .
