The Native American Civilizations and their confrontations with the Old World

The new developments in technology in the fifteenth century helped European navigation excel at its best. The invention of the magnetic compass and the building of larger and stronger ships for voyages leading to carriage of huge quantities of cargo with safety, fostered the discovery of new lands. The Spanish and the Portuguese became the first to venture across the Atlantic in search of raw materials, trade and spreading their faith. In their venture to control trade politically, they established colonies and exploited their natural resources. This paper aims to explore the ruthless means adopted by the Europeans to colonies the American continent leading to the devastation of the traditional cultures, beliefs and civilizations there. The paper outlines the magnificence of the Native American Civilizations which they lost to the assailants from the Old World.
