The new sate of chhattisgarh, the 26th State of Indian Union was formed on 1st Nov. 2000. It is endowed with rich mineral as well as forest wealth and a very fertile land. Actually this part is best known as the Rice Bowl of India. Predominantly a tribal state, with well over 35 big and small colorful tribes, it has all the ingredients of becoming the most prosperous state of the Indian Union.

Durg district and hence the Durg town (which was actually founded in 10th century and called Shiv - Durg) is situated on , Mumbai - Howrah ( via - Nagpur) mainline, just 250 km away form Nagpur and 40
km away from Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh. Bhilai, which has Asia’s largest Steel Plant Constitutes the township area of Durg city.
Govt.V.Y.T.PG. Autonomous College, Durg (Erstname: Govt. Arts & Science College, Durg) was founded in August 1958. It started with just two rooms in the local Hindi Bhavan. The foundation stone of the present building was laid by the then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Dr. Kailashnath Katzu in Nov. 1958. The college was shifted to its present site in 1962. Initially there were only 3 labs and a few classrooms. After nearly 54 years, the college now has 49 classrooms, 19 laboratories, 16 PG departments and 24 U.G. department and provides UG & PG courses in Arts, Science and Commerce faculties & a major research center other then university. The college also has a hostel. Today this College is the biggest Government College in Chhattisgarh with student strength of more than 3000.
With a large campus of 15 acres Main Campus + 7acres Boy's Hostel and nearly 5 acres Staff Quarter Campus  the College started operating as an autonomous college from 1989. It holds the unique opportunity of being a mixed bowl of urban and tribal & rural students.
This Institution holds high repute in the fields of sports. The students have excelled in power lifting, weight lifting and Judo at both the National and International levels. It has Football ground, Cricket ground, Badminton Court, and other facilities for indoor games.Construction of indoor Badminton holl is in Progress.
The NSS and NCC and Youth red cross wings are actively involved in social activities and holds camps regularly in the rural areas, with the mission of spreading literacy and hygiene. They also organize Blood donation camps and Environmental Awareness Campaigns. The NCC also has a separate Girls Wing.
The college has a strong, committed and dedicated teaching faculty of 68 PhD holder and 5 M. Phil holders. There are 46 non-teaching members and 38 daily wage employees. The teaching faculty is actively engaged in research work. Numbers of co-curricular and extra curricular activities are regularly organized throughout the year. This has also been acknowledged by NAAC peer team in their report. 
The college has a study center for IGNOU since 1987 where nearly 800 students are enrolled for management and other programmes.
The college has a placement cell and organizes campus interviews every year. With a well defined Goal and Objective which is to Impart Quality Education at the Lowest Cost as per the Govt. norms, the institution also takes care of the personal and emotional needs of the students through the Guidance Cell.
Till now the College was following the annual pattern with the UGC model curricula as its syllabus College has adopted Semester system in PG Class From 2005 in all PG classes which may be extended to UG classes in future. The college has more then 180 teaching days. It has a transparent admission policy as per the Govt. guide lines.
The college library is well equipped with books, journals, periodicals and reading rooms. It has a book bank facility for SC & ST students.
The college gives a number of scholarships for SC / ST /OBC/ Sports/Merit students sanctioned by the government.
This college is not only an autonomous institution Reaccredited by NAAC with 'A' Grade in 2011 and also selected for "college with Potential for Excellence" I st and II nd Phase.
